University Hill Perspective

business districts

There are two primary business districts located in the Hill area - the Crouse-Marshall business district and the East Genesee business district. These two business centers are home to a variety of specialty retail stores, restaurants and services that meet the needs of employees, residents and visitors in the University Hill area.

The Crouse-Marshall Business District (CMBD) is comprised of more than 70 retail businesses, including unique restaurants and boutiques. A wide variety of goods-from bagels to shoes-can be found in this convenient shopping district. The wide range of services in this area include dry cleaning, tailoring, a pharmacy, beauty and barber shops, film processing and medical offices. Marshall Square Mall features a popular student bookstore, copy center, and post office branch.

A variety of foods are available at Crouse-Marshall restaurants, ranging from vegetarian fare to Middle Eastern. Delicatessens, pizza shops, and fast food restaurants are also housed in this district. Several popular nightspots create a festive atmosphere. Known as "M Street", this area remains a favorite attraction for the late night crowd, as well as for University alumnae during football weekends. The Crouse-Marshall businesses form an exciting, upbeat retail center aimed at meeting the needs of students and employees on the Hill campuses.

The Crouse-Marshall Business Association (CMBA) is an organization that represents the retailers and service providers along Crouse Avenue and Marshall Street in the University Hill area. The CMBA consists of 70 members who serve students, employees and visitors on the Hill. A member of the University Hill Corporation, this organization meets bimonthly and works to address the issues and concerns of the retail and business sector.

The East Genesee Business District is located at the base of the University Hill and serves as an accessible resource for students, employees and residents of the area.

Through the years, this district has evolved from a primarily residential neighborhood into a multifaceted community. As a result of this change, the East Genesee district harbors a diverse mix of stores, restaurants, services, major hotels, highly-acclaimed cultural facilities, modern health and medical complexes, and religious and community organizations committed to serving Hill-area residents. Many of the buildings erected at the turn of the century still remain in the neighborhood, providing a traditional dimension. Tree-lined streets with decorative flowerbeds and Forman Park all add to the charm of the area.

Visitors to this district will find an array of choices and services through more than 50 retail stores, restaurants and businesses. Complementing the district are the area's cultural facilities, which include Syracuse Stage. Rounding out the neighborhood atmosphere of the community is the balance of residential areas, churches, and social and community service organizations.

The East Genesee Regent Association (EGRA), formed in 1972, is an organization of property owners, business people, residents and citizens concerned with the future of the East Genesee business community. The Association works to promote the area, to encourage community development, to plan for the future, and to guarantee adequate parking, security and environmental maintenance. In recent years, the EGRA has organized a spectacular holiday party for area children. As a member of the University Hill Corporation, the East Genesee Regent Association is also involved in the overall planning and development of the entire Hill area.
