University Hill Perspective

parks & recreation facilities

For the spectator or participant, the Hill offers an array of activities to delight sports enthusiasts of all ages. The Carrier Dome, a multipurpose facility located in the center of the Syracuse University campus, is the only domed stadium in the Northeast. Seating 50,000, the dome is the largest structure of its kind on a U.S. college campus. The Carrier Dome is the home of the nationally recognized Syracuse "Orangemen" teams in football, basketball and lacrosse. The Syracuse Orangemen are the pride of the Central New York region and each year thousands of people gather on the Hill to cheer on their teams. In addition to University athletic events, the Carrier Dome is host to high school competitions, community events and exciting concerts that have included performers such as the Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen and Billy Joel. The Dome has also been the site of prestigious sports events such as U.S. Olympic Committees National Sports Festival, the Empire State Games and the AAU/USA Junior Olympics.

Additional athletic events take place at Manley Field House, a multipurpose athletic facility and office complex located on the South Campus of Syracuse University. Manley Field House contains a number of offices including those of the intercollegiate athletic administration, coaching staff, sports information, planned giving, NCAA compliance, athletes center for educational services, and sports medicine and equipment operations. Located midway between the two office wings is the Manley arena, a basketball court, 200-meter indoor track and wrestling facility, which is the site of both University and community-oriented events. Other University athletic and recreation facilities include Coyne Stadium, a soccer stadium, a 400-meter outdoor track, Hookway Fields and several grass practice fields.

Tucked away in the Hill are two beautiful public parks that add to the attractiveness of the community. Thornden Park is centrally located between Ostrom Avenue, Madison Street, South Beech Street and Clarendon Street. In 1994, Thornden Park was prestigiously listed on the State and National Register of Historic Places. This 76-acre park offers a variety of recreational activities and hosts an array of community events. Among the facilities at Thornden Park are five tennis courts, three basketball courts, a football and soccer field, a fitness trail, a picnic area, and an inground swimming pool. Also within Thornden Park is an outdoor natural stone amphitheater. The amphitheater has hosted events such as concerts, theater productions, and picnics.

Thornden Park is also home to the E.M. Mills Memorial Rose Garden. This garden showcase has been meticulously maintained by the Syracuse Rose Society for the past 75 years. The Thornden Park Pinetum is also housed within the Park and is home to a wide variety of pine trees. The Pinetum has recently been revitalized with assistance from the Thornden Park Association and the College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

Forman Park is located in the heart of the East Genesee community. The Park's magnificent water fountain, colorful flowers, shady trees, and park benches make it a popular gathering place for neighborhood residents. Forman Park was declared a public park by the trustees of the Village of Syracuse in 1839. The park was named after Joshua Forman, considered to be the founder of Syracuse, and the land for the park was donated by Lewis H. Redfield. A bronze monument of Forman and Redfield, cast in Florence, Italy, was donated by Margaret Treadwell Smith and was unveiled in 1908. Forman Park has been the site of several celebrations hosted by the East Genesee Regent Association, the University Hill Corporation, and the Syracuse Department of Parks and Recreation, to commemorate the restoration of the park and the revitalization of the East Genesee area.
